Which country in Asia to choose for a family trip?

we are big fans of Asia, since always, and by becoming parents, Asia is a continent which particularly seemed to us adapted for our first great trips in family, especially in Southeast Asia. Why ? Southeast Asia offers a great change of scenery, rather safe countries, and life on site is often very economical. So, for our first trip to Asia with children, Ticoeur was 18 months old and we went to Malaysia.

country in Asia to choose for a family trip

Since then, we have visited many other Asian countries, of which I spoke to you on the blog and today I wanted to make a small assessment of all our stays in Southeast Asia because a question that you me often ask by mail is: which country in Asia do you recommend for a family trip? Here is the result of our experience, having visited almost all the countries of Southeast Asia, much of which with children:

Vietnam: from north to south, beautiful landscapes to discover

The +

  • Easy to organize your trip in advance or on site.
  • Cultural scenery, colonial architecture, beaches.
  • Often rooms with 2 queen beds so ideal for 4.
  • Great choice of accommodation for all budgets.
  • One of my favorite cuisines in Asia (well, it’s very personal …).

The – :

  • Cities with very chaotic traffic. Be careful as a pedestrian.
  • I did not like Ho Chi Minh and I did not find Sapa exceptional.

Practical information :

  • My favorites: Hoi An , Mekong Delta , Hanoi and then there is the region of Danang that I would love to discover / Halong Bay is more suitable for lovers than family.
  • The season: from November to April.
  • Flying hours: 11h one way / 13h return.

My conclusion: An easy family trip. Do not spend too much time in big cities. To travel by plane.

Thailand: a classic, very popular with families

The +:

  • Easy to organize your trip as a country used to tourism.
  • We meet many families traveling with children in Thailand.
  • Change of scenery and pretty islands.
  • Ability to travel by plane at low prices.
  • Great choice of accommodation for all budgets.

The – :

  • Too many tourists on some islands in February.
  • I recommend avoiding the extreme north because of malaria.
  • Personally I did not like Chiang Mai.
  • Of course you have to see Bangkok but not stay long because the city is a little oppressive with children.

Practical information :

  • Visits I recommend: Bangkok, Koh Phi Phi (out of season), Koh Lipe, Koh Samui, Koh Tao …
  • The season: from November to April but possible in summer in the islands on the eastern side.
  • Flight hours: 11:15 one way / 12h return.

My conclusion: An easy family trip. I would prefer the islands, with flights by plane.

Bali (Indonesia): an island on a human scale with beautiful traditions …

The +:

  • Cultural scenery, rice field, lush vegetation.
  • Beauty temples, snorkeling, beautiful traditional atmosphere.
  • An island on a human scale.
  • Possibility of coupling with Gilis Islands (Lombok).
  • Very pretty villas or hotels with a budget pool.

The – :

  • Too many tourists in the south of the island (Kuta area).
  • Beautiful beaches but not heavenly.
  • Be careful if you rent a car. It’s not easy to drive in Bali !

Practical information :

  • My favorites: Amed, rice fields in the Munduk region. Re-read our itinerary in Bali .
  • The season: May to September.
  • Flight hours: No direct flight. Go through Singapore or Kuala Lumpur so count 16:30 at best.

My opinion in conclusion: An easy and very pleasant trip with small distances to go.
